On 25th April 2024, Lanza Jet, a start-up focused on creating Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), revealed that Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund has invested in their company. This new funding injection will enable Lanza Jet to continue growing its capabilities and expertise in deploying its eco-friendly fuel production technology worldwide. Through an innovative process using sustainable, waste sources allowing the production of SAF. Lanza Tech, a company specialising in carbon recycling technology introduced ‘Alcohol to jet” technology in 2020, which therefore Lanza Jet further developed. They source the production of SAF and renewable diesel by extracting ethanol from agricultural and organic waste, various biomass materials and low-carbon sugarcane, etc.

Jimmy Samartzis, Chief Executive Officer of Lanza Jet said: Through its support of Lanza Jet's first-of-a-kind ethanol to SAF biorefinery, Lanza Jet Freedom Pines Fuels, Microsoft has played a significant role in making SAF production a reality in the United States, and this investment reemphasizes its urgent commitment to decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors.”

This funding will also aid Microsoft in achieving its goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2030. In 2022, Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund contributed $50 million to support the construction of Lanza Jet Freedom Pines Fuels in Soperton, Georgia, a facility slated to open in January 2024. By the second quarter of 2024, this facility is expected to produce 10 million gallons of SAF and renewable diesel annually.

Brandon Middaugh, Senior Director of Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund, said: “Microsoft is investing in partners who share our commitment to advancing a net-zero economy and who are building the market for critical solutions like SAF and renewable diesel.’’
