Boeing's Historic Sustainability Milestone: Unveiling Its Biggest Blended Neste SAF Purchase

Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ is an eco-friendly alternative derived from renewable waste, slashing emissions by up to 85% when used in neat form. It seamlessly integrates into existing aircraft systems, ensuring sustainability in air travel.

In 2024, Boeing is making its largest-ever commitment to sustainability by purchasing 7.5 million gallons of blended Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™. This marks a significant leap forward for Boeing, representing a 60% increase from their 2023 procurement. The blend, with 30% derived from renewable waste like used cooking oil, will be supplied by EPIC Fuels and Av fuel. This substantial volume of blended SAF will support Boeing's eco Demonstrator program and U.S. commercial flights, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster a greener future for air travel.

This strategic investment underscores Boeing's ongoing commitment to sustainability by actively reducing its carbon footprint and advancing the adoption of eco-friendly aviation practices. By integrating renewable sources into its fuel supply chain and collaborating with industry partners, Boeing continues to drive innovation and progress toward a more sustainable future for aviation.

Ryan Faucett, Vice President of Environmental Sustainability at Boeing said that Safety and quality remain their primary focus, and alongside this commitment, sustainability remains a top priority. Recognizing the crucial role of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in decarbonizing aviation, company has integrated SAF blends, comprising approximately 20% of their fuel usage, into their operations. They are steadfast in their efforts to increase the utilization of SAF, aiming to stimulate growth within the SAF industry. Furthermore, they are actively engaged in initiatives to enhance the accessibility and affordability of SAF for their commercial airline customers. Through collaborative efforts, strategic investments, research endeavours, and the development of supportive policies, we are working to facilitate a more widespread adoption of SAF. Boeing will obtain blended SAF through direct supply or book-and-claim methods. Neste will deliver 4 million gallons of blended SAF to Boeing's fuel farms in the Pacific Northwest, while EPIC Fuels and Av fuel will supply 2.5 million and 1.5 million gallons, respectively. Additionally, Boeing will purchase SAF certificates equivalent to the emission reductions from 3.5 million gallons of Neste's blended SAF through a book-and-claim system. This process involves purchasing SAF certificates to offset conventional jet fuel usage. EPIC Fuels will fulfil Boeing's book-and-claim purchases by supplying the 3.5 million gallons of blended SAF.
