Revolutionizing Manufacturing: Bombardier goes green with EPD

On April 3, 2024, Bombardier became the only business jet manufacturer to reveal the scientifically analysed environmental impact of its full product line. The release of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its Challenger 650 business jet marks the culmination of Bombardier's commitment to generating and publishing EPDs for all of its in-production aircraft by 2025.

As an essential component of Bombardier's comprehensive environmental strategy, EPDs enable the business and its partners to proactively reduce the environmental impact of their products. As one of the leading companies in aviation, Bombardier (BBD-B.TO)  and its subsidiaries dedicate their work to manufacture and maintain the best business jets available with over 5,000 aircrafts in operation from all around the world.  They serve a diverse clientele ranging from Government’s, entrusting them with military special-mission applications, private people and multinationals companies.

By outfitting Bombardier’s business jets with the Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs), the aim  was to collect essential data for lowering the aircraft's environmental footprint at every level of their value chain and assess the aircraft throughout their life cycle against possible environmental impact indicators*. This was consistent with the company's goal of being a leader in environmentally conscious and creative business aviation product design.

‘The role of EPDs is not to stamp our aircraft as more sustainable than others, rather to take ownership of the environmental impact they generate,” said Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Executive Vice President, Aircraft Sales & Bombardier Defense, Bombardier.

In 2022, the company published a self-declared EPD for the Challenger 3500 aircraft and Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircrafts in 2023 and the Challenger 650 this April. They had began this investigation whilst constructing the Global 7500, later becoming an inititive due to having the industry’s first business jet to acquire a third-party validated EPD in 2020.

The fact that all of Bombardier's business jets now in production have publicly viewable EPDs speaks volumes about the company's commitment to authenticity and innovation in the definition of business aviation. These also represent the transparency that Bombardier fosters with its customers.
