EasyJet Acquires SR Technics' Maintenance Hangar in Malta

Swiss MRO provider SR Technics has sold its base maintenance facility in Malta to EasyJet. The UK-based budget airline welcomes the site's workforce of over 400 employees and plans to use the six-bay hangar for major maintenance checks on its fleet of more than 340 Airbus A320-family aircraft.

Since its establishment in 2010, in a two-bay legacy hangar, EasyJet has been a primary customer for SR Technics' Maltese operations. SR Technics later added a temporary one-bay hangar and in 2022, despite construction delays and redesigns due to the pandemic, opened the purpose-built six-bay facility. The construction had started in 2019.

Brendan McConnellogue, EasyJet’s engineering director, expressed the airline's satisfaction in integrating the facility and its skilled workforce into the company. "This acquisition aligns with EasyJet's strategy of bringing more of its aircraft maintenance operations in-house," he said.

Owen McClave, CEO of SR Technics, mentioned that divesting the aircraft base maintenance business is a strategic move to focus on engine services, a shift announced in 2020 as part of a restructuring plan during the pandemic. "We found an ideal partner in EasyJet to take over our maintenance operations in Malta," he added.

At a handover ceremony on 31 May, Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela stated, "The government is prepared to support the industry. We are proud of the Maltese leadership managing these hangars and commend our technicians and engineers whose dedication has attracted and retained esteemed companies like EasyJet."

Before the divestment, SR Technics provided maintenance services to various third-party customers at the Maltese facility, in addition to EasyJet.
