In July 2023, a shipment of gold jewellery worth millions of dollars was entrusted to British Airways for transport from Bahrain to Chicago. The jewellery, owned by Bahraini jeweller Al-Arefi Jewelry, was safely delivered to Chicago O'Hare. However, upon arrival, the precious cargo was discovered missing.
Following the theft, an investigation was launched, leading to the arrest and prosecution of the two GSI employees involved. The stolen jewelry was eventually recovered.
Al-Arefi Jewelry took legal action against British Airways in Bahrain, claiming the airline was responsible for the missing cargo. In February 2024, a Bahraini court ruled in favor of Al-Arefi, ordering British Airways to pay approximately $406,000 in compensation.
In response to the Bahraini court ruling, British Airways filed a lawsuit against GSI International in a Chicago court. The airline alleges that GSI's negligence and failure to secure the jewelry led to the theft and subsequent financial loss. British Airways is seeking indemnity for the $406,000 it was ordered to pay Al-Arefi, as well as additional damages.
This incident highlights the importance of secure cargo handling procedures in the aviation industry. Airlines and ground handlers have a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of valuable cargo entrusted to their care. The outcome of the lawsuit between British Airways and GSI International will have implications for the industry, emphasizing the need for robust security measures and accountability in cargo handling operations.
