OEMs Freight Flight Evolution: A Tale of the Skies 2019 Vs 2023

In the dynamic world of global trade and logistics, air cargo plays a pivotal role in connecting businesses, industries, and consumers across continents. Every day, millions of tons of goods, ranging from perishable foods to high-value electronics, are transported swiftly and efficiently through the skies, thanks to the dedicated efforts of airlines and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) specializing in air freight.

From developing specialized freighter aircraft to enhancing existing models for increased efficiency and capacity, OEMs play a critical role in shaping the landscape of air cargo transportation. In this blog post, we delve into the intriguing realm of aviation to examine the carried freight performance of OEMs between 2019 & 2023 through meticulous analysis.

Graphic 1:

  • This graphic compares the freight carried in 2019 & 2023 in terms of the OEMs. From that it can be clearly observed that only 347 billion metric tons of freight was carried in 2023 which is 7% less than that of 2019 stats.
  • On deeper segregation and comparing the two major giant OEMs of aviation industry i.e., Airbus & Boeing, the trend is the same with decrease freight carried by 5% in 2023 compared to 2019.
  • These analysations indicate that the industry has not reached the pre-covid levels till by the end of 2023 and also the 5% negative growth of Airbus & Boeing compared to negative 7% that of industry demonstrates that the two major giants are recovering better after pandemic and also there might be an other reason of these giants capturing more market share.

Graphic 2:

  • This graphic compares the contribution done by specific OEMs in the total freight carried.
  • These analysations indicate that the freight carried by Airbus & Boeing combined has increased by 1% between 2019 & 2023 which resulted in decrease in percentage share of other OEMs. There are several reasons for this phenomena which are, airlines going for a fleet optimization, aircrafts re-configurations and increased focus on cost efficiency.

The graphic shows the freight carried in 2019 and 2023, for various regions and OEMs.

  • Year-over-Year Comparison: For all the manufacturers (Airbus, Boeing and Other OEMs) and across the regions of Europe and Middle East on an average, the freight carried in 2023 is lesser than in 2019. At the same time the stats remained almost same in Africa and Oceania regions, whereas the Asia & American regions faced critical fluctuations.

  • OEMs comparison: On comparing the performance of all the highlighted OEMs on the basis of freight carried, region wise we get,

1. Airbus: Airbus has performed well in the Asia and American regions while having slighter downfall in Europe & Oceania regions.

2. Boeing: Boeing's performance is not that good as of its major competitor same as in the case of the passenger flights which we analysed in our previous post, its share has declined in almost every region.

3. Other OEMs: Other OEMs also faced the same situation as of Boeing but ended up maintaining same stats in Africa & Oceania regions.
