MAG commends Government’s Commitment to Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Manchester airports group (MAG) has positively responded to Department for Transport’s (DfT) efforts to support the aviation industry in reaching its 2050 net zero emissions target. The announcement, which will become effective in January 2050, marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind. MAG has expressed support for the DfT’s new requirement mandating that constitute 10% of overall fuel usage in the industry by 2030.

Additionally MAG has endorsed the launch of a consultation on a revenue certainty program for Sustainability Aviation Fuel (SAF) , highlighting its potential to maintain competitive air travel costs and promote the growth of UKs SAF manufacturing sector.

MAG welcomes these important steps toward decarbonising our sector, through both the Sustainable Aviation Fuel mandate and a preferred option for a revenue certainty mechanism for SAF production in the UK” said Neil Robinson, MAG’s Chief Sustainability Officer. He adds on by saying furthermore, Robinson referenced recent MAG-commissioned research indicating that utilizing household waste to produce SAF would yield environmental benefits five times greater than burning it for electricity generation. Additionally, government projections suggest that the SAF could contribute over 1.8 billion to the economy and create more than 10,000 jobs nationwide.
