Qantas has made the decision to expedite the commencement of John Mullen's tenure as chairman, moving it forward by 10 weeks to Monday. This alteration in schedule coincides with ongoing pressures faced by incumbent chairman Richard Goyder at Woodside and challenges confronting the airline due to conflicts in the Middle East.

As a former chairman of Telstra, Mullen will initially serve as "chairman-elect" until formal shareholder approval at the next AGM in October. Qantas has indicated that Mullen intends to gradually reduce his professional commitments, including his roles as chairman at Treasury Wine Estates and Brambles.

In expressing his enthusiasm for his new role, Mullen lauded Qantas as one of the world's premier airlines and expressed confidence in its ability to thrive post-pandemic. His appointment, somewhat surprisingly, received commendation from the Transport Workers' Union (TWU), which praised Mullen's earnest approach to negotiation with workers.

TWU's national secretary, Michael Kaine, hailed the leadership change as a positive step towards addressing longstanding issues between Qantas and its unionized workforce. This move reflects the airline's commitment to navigating challenges and fostering a constructive relationship with its employees.
