While SAS may not immediately join SkyTeam, it has indicated that Euro Bonus members can begin claiming frequent flyer benefits with most SkyTeam carriers from September 1st.

SAS, a founding member of the Star Alliance, faced financial difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Air France-KLM stepped in to rescue the struggling carrier. As both Air France and KLM belong to SkyTeam, SAS's likely transition to this alliance is understandable. Benefits for Euro Bonus Silver, Gold, and Diamond members will continue until August 31st.

The airline's journey towards SkyTeam began with its bankruptcy protection filing in July 2022 and a subsequent restructuring plan backed by a $1.16 billion investment consortium in October 2023. Air France-KLM's acquisition of a 20 percent stake in SAS signals a significant change in alliances.

SAS is negotiating with SkyTeam and its member carriers to ensure a smooth transition for Euro Bonus members. The move to SkyTeam, expected between April and June of this year, will grant SAS access to a broader network, including a transatlantic joint venture with Air France-KLM, Delta, and Virgin Atlantic.

This strategic shift will impact two major airline alliances, with SAS moving from Star Alliance to SkyTeam. Once finalized, SAS customers can expect expanded travel options, with access to over 1,060 destinations worldwide through SkyTeam's extensive network.

Key members of SkyTeam include Delta and Aero Mexico in North America, Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, ITA Airways, and Czech Airlines in Europe, and Korean Air, Xiamen Air, China Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines in Asia.
