The Scope of the Retrofit Program
The retrofit program will commence with 27 narrow-body Airbus A320neo aircraft, followed by 40 wide-body Boeing planes. The first aircraft to undergo this transformation is the VT-EXN, a single-aisle A320neo, which entered the hangar in mid-September 2024. After prototyping and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals, VT-EXN is expected to re-enter commercial service by December 2024.

Key Features of the Upgraded Aircraft
The upgraded aircraft will feature a modern three-cabin layout, including Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Business Class: Eight luxurious seats with 40-inch pitch, adjustable armrests, recline, and charging ports.
  • Premium Economy: 24 extra legroom seats with adjustable headrests and 32-inch legroom.
  • Economy Class: 132 ergonomic seats with a 28-29 inch pitch and additional legroom.

In addition to seating upgrades, the aircraft will also feature modern lighting, USB ports (Type A and C) for charging devices, and holders for portable electronic devices. New carpets, curtains, and upholstery will reflect the airline’s updated design.

Phased Implementation
The retrofit program will be implemented in phases, with three to four aircraft undergoing retrofit each month. The entire narrow-body fleet is expected to be upgraded by mid-2025. Following the narrow-body aircraft, the wide-body Boeing planes will also undergo similar upgrades.
Enhancing Passenger Experience
According to Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Air India, the commencement of the interior refit of the narrow-body fleet is a crucial step in enhancing the flying experience for customers. The comprehensive upgrade of Air India’s physical product is a vital component of the airline’s transformation into a world-class carrier.

Conclusion

Air India’s $400 million retrofit program is a significant move towards modernizing its fleet and improving passenger experience. With upgraded seats, modern amenities, and a refreshed cabin design, Air India aims to offer a superior flying experience that meets the needs of today’s discerning travelers.
