Air India Updates Baggage Allowance: More Choice, More Competitive

Air India has recently introduced a revised baggage allowance policy for domestic flights, effective May 2nd, 2024. This update aligns with our commitment to provide passengers with greater flexibility and choice while also bringing our baggage limits more in line with industry standards.

What's Changing?

The new policy introduces a tiered system based on the fare family chosen by the passenger. Here's a breakdown:

  • Economy - Comfort & Comfort Plus: The allowance for these fare families has been reduced to 15 kg per checked bag, down from 20 kg and 25 kg respectively.
  • Economy - Flex: This fare family maintains its previous allowance of 25 kg per checked bag.
  • Business & First Class: Allowances for premium cabins remain unchanged, with passengers able to check up to two bags, each weighing up to 35 kg.

Why the Change?

Air India states this adjustment aligns their baggage policy with industry standards. This move could help them streamline operations and potentially reduce costs associated with baggage handling. Additionally, the tiered system allows them to offer competitive fares at various price points.

More Choice for You

This change allows us to offer a wider range of fare options, catering to different travel needs and budgets. Passengers looking for the most affordable option can choose the Comfort or Comfort Plus fares with a 15 kg baggage allowance. For those who require more checked baggage, the Flex fare remains a good option with its 25 kg allowance.

Industry Alignment

The revised baggage allowance also brings Air India more in line with other domestic airlines in India. This standardization helps ensure a fair and competitive marketplace for air travel.

Flying Returns Members Get More

Don't forget, our Flying Returns members can still enjoy additional baggage allowance on top of the standard limits depending on their membership tier (Silver, Gold, and Platinum).
